about thismfbakes

During the COVID-19 lockdown, I was a scared junior in college who had just come home and moved into my (now) brother-in-law’s shabby little two-bedroom condo with my boyfriend to stay safe from our essential-working families. We hunkered down, frightened, and found that trying new recipes and learning to cook independently was a great way to distract ourselves and stay fed. Through this process of trial and error, we watched loads of YouTube videos, braved grocery store trips for BASIC kitchen items (I burnt my hand the first time I took something out of the oven in the bachelor pad, learning the hard way that his brother’s only oven mitt was riddled with holes), borrowed pots and pans from friendly neighbors, burnt homemade macaroni and cheese so horribly into my mom’s le creuset dutch oven that it’s still stained (sorry mom!), tried family recipes sourced from Reddit strangers, and ended up staying awake LONG into the night accidentally babysitting doughs, cheesecakes, and other recipes I failed to read ahead before starting.

As we baked and cooked the days away, comforting ourselves with homemade donuts, gyoza, cheesecake, chicken piccatta, rosemary garlic bread, and more, I found myself gravitating towards the structured world of baking, while my partner found himself enjoying the freedom in cooking (and his brother just liked to eat, happy to accept rent in the form of food from two broke students). Eventually, the COVID-19 pandemic began to fade away. I graduated from college, my partner and I moved into our own place, I started my first corporate job, pursued an MBA, and all the while continued to bake my heart out. I’ve tackled hundreds of recipes, learned more than I ever thought I would, gained a reputation among friends, family, and neighbors for baking (maybe too much!), and am slowly eating my way around the world, experiencing TONS of new food cultures.

Now, I’m looking to share what I’ve learned as a humble MF in this world who happens to love baking, traveling, and eating. I’m also hoping to document and share my current progress in the world of food, and learn more for myself along the way, because if there’s one thing I’m sure of, it’s: the more you learn the less you know
